COVID-19 Update: Australia postpones reopening as National Cabinet meets over Omicron

  • Australia has pushed back the reopening of international borders for international skilled and student cohorts, as well as humanitarian, working holiday maker and provisional family visa holders from 1 December until 15 December.
  • Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says medical advice will govern any future changes.
  • The opposition has backed the government’s decision to postpone the reopening of international borders.
  • National Cabinet is set to meet today to discuss the national, state, and territorial response to the threat of the Omicron variant as the Deputy Chief Health Officer says the spread is inevitable in the community.
  • There are six confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in quarantine in Australia.
  • Western Australia approaches the deadline for mandatory vaccination for multiple industries.
  • Queensland mandates vaccination for workers in high-risk settings from 17 December.

COVID-19 STATS:

Victoria recorded 918 locally acquired cases and six deaths.
NSW recorded 179 new community cases and three deaths.
