On Friday, Australia reported at least 44 COVID-19 deaths, including 22 in Victoria, 11 in New South Wales (NSW) and six in Queensland. In addition, Western Australia reported six historical deaths.
NSW Health said Omicron's BA.2 sub-lineage was responsible for most new cases in the state.
However, the proportion of specimens identified as BA.4 and BA.5 has increased in recent weeks, with BA.5 increasing more than BA.4.
NSW also reported its third case of monkeypox in a returned traveller from Europe.
