On Friday, Australia reported at least 40 COVID-19 deaths, including 19 in Victoria and 11 in New South Wales (NSW). Also, Western Australia reported six historical deaths.

NSW Health said Omicron's B.1.1.529 is currently the dominant COVID-19 variant responsible for most new cases in the state.

However, the proportion of specimens identified as BA.5 has increased in recent weeks.

The Victorian Premier announced (9 June) a one-off Healthcare Worker Winter Retention and Surge Payment will be made to clinical and non-clinical staff, and additional support offered to those who work night shifts. All staff employed in public health services, and Ambulance Victoria will be eligible for a payment of $3,000. Part time, casual and new staff employed on or after 1 July, who are still employed on 30 September 2022, are eligible for a pro-rata equivalent of the payment.

COVID-19 vaccinations will be available at ten primary schools as walk-in pop-ups across Victoria over the next days. A number of vaccination centres will also close in the next week.

In the Australian Capital Territory, from 3.50pm today (10 June) the COVID-19 testing centre in Nicholls will be permanently closed. Staff will take over operations at the Mitchell testing centre.
