GOAT — you’ve probably heard it before. Literally, a goat is an animal with horns and a beard. But in English, when we say someone is the GOAT, we mean they are the Greatest Of All Time, the very best at what they do.

Today, you’ll hear it in all kinds of situations.

When talking about the best athletes ever:

  • I can’t believe you think Ronaldo is better. Messi won the World Cup! He is clearly the GOAT of football.

You can also use it for someone who did something really well, for example at work:

  • My boss let me come in an hour late today - she's the GOAT.

This word is also useful to compliment someone who helped you:

  • Thanks for fixing my computer. You’re the GOAT.

Use it as an adjective, to say something is really good or amazing:

  • This pizza is goated! We have to come back next week!

It can also be useful if you play video games:

  • This game is so goated.
