Martina shares her journey from Italy to Australia and how she worked to become a registered nurse in a new healthcare system. After arriving in Australia in 2022, she faced the challenge of adapting to unfamiliar medical terminology, workplace practices and the many acronyms used in the Australian health sector. To practise as a nurse, Martina completed the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) pathway, which included demonstrating English proficiency, passing the NCLEX and OSCE exams, and submitting documentation of her qualifications and previous work experience to AHPRA. The process was demanding and costly, requiring significant preparation and perseverance. While studying for the required exams, Martina worked as a waitress to support herself and improve her English. Today, she works as a registered nurse and has built strong relationships with her colleagues. Reflecting on her journey, Martina encourages others not to be discouraged by language barriers or challenges along the way, and believes that dedication, hard work and passion for the profession can open doors to new opportunities.
