Gurleen Khaira: Filling gap in OET training and English knowledge

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an international English language test that assesses the language and communication skills of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practise in an English-speaking environment.

If you are applying for Skilled Migration in Australia, you will need to prove your English language ability.

The required level of English for visa application depends on the individual visa subclass.

The Occupational English Test (OET) is also accepted as evidence of proficient and superior levels of English. But it is only appropriate for medical and allied health professionals.

Gurleen Khaira is a nationally acclaimed OET trainer, entrepreneur, and career counsellor.

She has a post-graduate qualification in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and her purpose and passion lie in helping students with their English language skills.

She has received four National awards for her work in the education sector especially in the fields of English teaching.

Khaira told SBS Punjabi that she has been involved with soft-skills and English language training since 2013.

“I followed my passion of teaching in English after my return to India from Australia in 2013,” said Ms Khaira.

Ms Khaira came to Melbourne as an international student in 2011. She studied Food Science at University of Melbourne.

"My studentship in Australia not only equipped me with knowledge but also helped expand my horizon," said Ms Khaira.

"I am pleased to share that our organisation, Khaira Education, has been recognised by the OET Centre as the only Premium Provider in Asia so far, and that we have been listed on the official OET Website among the first five Premium Providers in the world.

“First of all, it is important to know that OET is only appropriate for medical and allied health professionals.

“I have met many nurses who don’t know the fact that the OET score can be submitted instead of IELTS scores.

“Some of them have really struggled and have even given up the chance to become a registered nurse in Australia and New Zealand.

“Keeping this in mind, I have also written a book ‘OET Speaking and Writing made easy for Nurses’.

“The OET score is likely to be useful when health professionals apply for permanent residency as a proof of English skill.

“Learning English starts with excelling in vocabulary. A good way to build a strong vocabulary will be to read books, newspapers, medical articles, editorials, and journals.
