The most liveable city in the world turns 181 today and it is still in great shape. Here is a bit of its history.

From small British settlement in 1835 to metropolis with over four millions inhabitants in 2016. Melbourne is a young city, very dynamic and creative, which for the sixth consecutive year has been crowned the most liveable city in the world by the Economist.

Melbourne was founded in an area in which the Kulin nation lived. The first British coloniser was John Batman.

At the same time another businessman, John Fawkner, arrived with his ship near the Yarra river to start a settlement. The groups led by the two men founded the city that was called Melbourne in honour of the then British Prime Minister, Lord William Lamb, usually addressed as Lord Melbourne.

Long live Melbourne!
