Melbourne’s Sikh community has made a generous donation of $20,000 to the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

A celebration of Sikh culture, the first ever Vaisakhi Sikh Day Parade [Nagar Kirtan] in the Melbourne CBD, also became a way to give back to the local community.

An estimated 20,000 people are believed to have attended this year’s event in Melbourne on April 13.

The celebratory event was organised by the Victorian Sikh Gurdwaras Council (VSGC) who also raised funds for the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Gurinder Kaur told SBS Punjabi that a total of $18,370 was raised through the Nagar Kirtan day donations and the remaining amount was pooled by Gurdwara Sahib Craigieburn to make it a round figure of $20,000.

“We are so very grateful to the Sikh Community who are an extremely generous group. Their donation of $20,000 is fantastic and very much appreciated,” Ms Randall told SBS Punjabi.

“The strength of the Good Friday Appeal comes from communities coming together and raising funds so that our great Royal Children's Hospital will always be a leader in paediatric care."

“The Sikh community is very charitable and we are very proud of that. Sharing with the needy and for a charitable cause is one of the three Golden Rules of Guru Nanak. We are very excited about raising at least $20,000 for the Good Friday Appeal”, he said.

The Good Friday Appeal is a not for profit charity that raises funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

In 2018, hundreds of thousands of people gave their hard earned money, time and talent to raise an extraordinary $18,043,251.

Since 1931, over $345 million has been raised through the Good Friday Appeal to support groundbreaking research, purchase life-saving equipment, provide ongoing education and training for hospital staff and focus on family centred care.
