An asylum seeker being held on Nauru has reportedly taken his own life.

Refugee advocates said the 26-year-old Iranian man was found dead inside his family's tent on Friday morning.

The man is believed to have been found by his wife, with the regional processing centre placed in lockdown.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre said the man's death is another strong indication of the policy failure of offshore detention.

"There are hundreds of people in urgent need of medical care to address complex conditions including major depression and suicidal ideation who are being denied care," detention advocacy manager Natasha Blucher said.

"We call on the minister to evacuate everyone in offshore processing to Australia immediately to prevent more lives being lost."

The man is the twelfth person to die in Australia's offshore detention centres, and the fifth on Nauru.

The Department of Home Affairs has been contacted for comment.
