The long-awaited Aged Care Act was already in effect, starting on 1st of November 2025, four years after a Royal Commission recommended major reforms to the sector.

Key Points
  • The federal government says it will give older Australians more choice and access to in-home support, but there are concerns that many people will end up paying more for care.
  • The government has already acted on some recommendations of the Royal Commission - such as increasing wages for aged care workers, and boosting supervision of residents in nursing homes.
  • According to the Treasury in their 2023 Intergenerational Report, within 40 years, the number of people over the age of 65 is expected to double, and the number of people aged over 85 will triple.
