"We have to realise that climate change is real", points out university lecturer Dr. Gil Tabucanon as he examines the dramatic rise in extreme weather events driven by climate change and the resulting displacement of communities from their island homes, including people from the Philippines and other Pacific island nations.

Key Points
  • People leave their islands for many reasons. Some, like Filipinos going to Saudi Arabia or Hong Kong, move to earn higher wages. Others are forced to leave because of war, conflict, or natural disasters.
  • Sydney-based academic Dr. Gil Tabucanon explores the long-term impacts of environmental migration, focusing on people forced to leave their homes as their islands become increasingly uninhabitable.
  • Tabucanon believes that Australia is on track in responding to the climate change issues, but there's more that it can do.
As part of the effort to raise awareness in the community, a Climate Change Panel talks about the effects of climate change in their "Disaffected" project in 2016 under the Blacktown Arts Centre.

Dr. Gil Marvel Tabucanon, one of the panellists for the said event, talks about the long-term impact of climate change on people from the Pacific Islands, including the Philippines, who are moving to different places.
