Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has set what he calls a non-negotiable cut-off date of October the 1st for asylum seekers to make protection claims or face the threat of deportation.

The refugee advocates' criticism comes as the Minister now faces new controversy on another front.

The Department of Immigration has confirmed nine people were injured when multiple shots were fired towards the Manus detention centre in Papua New Guinea last month. (april)
