Researchers from La Trobe University examined the spread of misinformation about contraceptives on TikTok, based on a new study.

Key Points
  • According to research released in June 2025 by La Trobe University, nearly 100 TikTok videos from August to September 2023 used hashtags such as: #birthcontrol, #contraception, #thepill, #naturalbirthcontrol, and #cycletracking.
  • Only 10% of the videos were created by actual medical professionals, according to the study.
  • One expert reminds the public: Look for reliable sources of contraceptive advice — and don’t immediately trust someone just because they claim to be a doctor or are simply wearing a lab coat.
