Leslyn May Tuclaud Lian trained as a nurse in Melbourne and found an opportunity to work as a clinical nurse in Kaniva, regional Victoria, then later moved to Warrnambool where she currently lives with her husband and children while she works part-time as a registered nurse Credit: with permission LM Tuclaud Liam

As a practice nurse (the term used for nurses working in clinics), I was trained to draw blood every morning on weekdays, as there’s no pathology there. The courier collects it at lunchtime and travels to Horsham, which has the nearest pathology centre to run the tests. Other tasks I do there are wound dressings, immunisations, care plans, and assisting GP with minor surgical procedures (ie skin cancer)

'My first trip out in the community bus to Adelaide for a tour in Adelaide Hills in a garden of Sophie Thomson, a presenter of gardening Australia in ABC. The locals of Kaniva invited me to join and I gladly went with them. I arrived in Kaniva few mos before this.' Leslyn shares how the local community of Kaniva made her feel welcomed
