This Tuesday, September 26 marks the centenary of the entry of Australian troops into the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
This battle is more commonly known as the Battle of Passchendaele in Australia and the English-speaking countries or Battle of East Flanders in France.
Australian participation in this battle was short but extremely costly in human lives.
This time, in 1917 was one of the time when some of the most horrific fighting of the first world war occurred
The battle of Ypres (Belgium) caused more than a fifth of the Australian casualties in the Great War and more than 500,000 soldiers on both sides were killed.
Led by Great Britain on the side of the allies, the Battle of Ypres saw the participation of Belgian, French and Canadian troops in the conflict.
To return to this historic battle Bertrand Tungandame spoke with historian Mat MacLachlan, a battlefield specialist and author of numerous documentaries.
It is a really good opportunity to remember what these men sacrificed 100 years on
