No more German Film Festival? Why?

Many of you have responded to our Facebook article, which announced that in the future there will be no "German Film Festival" organized by the Goethe Institute. On Monday, July 3, we will present a report in our series "Special Projects", which explains the background. Of course, it will also be available on our website as a podcast. Here are some answers already.

In our “Special Projects” report on Monday, we will hear from the director of the Goethe Institute in Australia, Sonja Griegoschewski, the program coordinator in Melbourne, Gabriele Urban, our ambassador in Canberra, Dr. Anna Prinz as well as the film critic and consultant of the GFF, Richard Kuipers.

But a few of the comments and questions on Facebook, we can already answer here:

The decision was not easy for anyone, because everyone loved the events, especially the opening and closing night parties.

Goethe Institute Director Sonja Griegoschewski

Now the Goethe Institute wants to expand the cooperation with the many other film festivals in Australia and, according to its actual tasks, promote the German language, including a children and youth film festival for the young audiences, who are still learning the language.

Many of the other language-specific festivals are not organized by the relevant cultural institutes, and have a commercial team.

Goethe Institute Director Sonja Griegoschewski

Another fallacy is that the withdrawal of the Namessponsoren Audi had something to do with the decision.

Goethe Institute Director Sonja Griegoschewski

German films will still be on display in the future. Several projects are being developed in this respect.

An interesting reference was also on our Facebook page:

And for an overview of German films shown in Australia, there is the new website of the Goethe Institute "Kino in OZ": https://www.goethe.de/ins/au/en/kul/sup/kio.html?wt_sc=kinoinoz
