This week the government will try to pass reforms to section 18C of the Act, which makes it illegal to 'insult' or 'offend' someone on the basis of their race -- instead inserting the word 'harass'.
But Tasmanian independent senator Jackie Lambie says she will join with the Xenophon senators in voting down the government's proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act.
With Jackie Lambie and Nick Xenophon's three senators opposed, the bill will not have the numbers to pass.
Ms Lambie says, 18C is not a big issue in Tasmania, and that it is time too move on:
"I think if they believe that they're actually weakening them, then that's going to be a problem. And like I said, it's a distraction. I believe it has the right balance, and I believe we should leave it alone and move on."
