Regional Australia: The Government's definition - and why it might surprise you

Australia welcomed 4,766 skilled workers to regional areas in 2016-17, but almost half settled in Perth, and many more in Darwin, Adelaide, Canberra and Hobart. Huh? How's that possible?

You see, until very recently, the Government classified all those cities as "regional". It only removed Perth from its "Regional Australia" list in November last year. The others continue to be eligible.

You pretty much have to live in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, plus Perth (since November) and (rather bizarrely) in Australia's Theme Park Capital Gold Coast, to be classified as "non regional".
