Work in Progress 2017 is the fourth time this annual free event for newly arrived migrants will take place in Australia. It is run by the organization Nomit Inc. (Italian Network of Melbourne), a not for profit organization. The event is open to the public, free of charge and takes place at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, on May 1, 2017.
The event offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Australian work legislation. The speakers focus especially on the situation of newly arrived migrants and young professionals in the current labour market and will give some valuable advice on career development opportunities in Australia. They also offer useful tips and strategies to overcome challenges related to a new labor market.
Maria Azzurra Tranfaglia is an International and Comparative Labour Law researcher and one of the speakers on the 1st of May. In her interview with SBS Italian she said:
“It gives people the possibility to develop a professional career because at the end of our meeting we have an informal networking with several employers and professionals in different industries.”
There are many speakers on the day, who will inform about different aspects of working in Australia. Gabrielle Marchetti, a principal lawyer from Jobwatch, will discuss the most common issues confronting migrant workers on working holiday, student or other visas, for example how to protect yourself from exploitation.
Luke Ryan, the Regional Officer Manager/Senior Fairwork Inspector from the Fairwork Ombudsman will present the Harvest Trail Campaign and give tips for backpackers and seasonal workers to have a better understanding of their workplace rights and obligations while working in a farm.
These are just two examples of what to expect.
