In the third part of our series: Stories from the State Library with Louise Anemaat, we talk about the so-called Enemy Aliens, Germans and Austrians, who were interned during the First World War in Australia. Many of them were actually Australians, even native Australians were present, but also people who arrived on merchant ships after the war had started. All have been imprisoned as war enemies in camps. The NSW State Library's collection contains photos, information about cultural events organized in the camps, and many other documents. Particularly interesting are the diaries, which were written by many internees, partly in German, partly in English. Louise Anemaat, executive director of the library and information services at the State Library of NSW, gives us an insight into what we can learn from the collection.
