German studies in Australia - more popular than ever

Australian Universities

Source: AAP

An estimated 2,000 Australian students are enrolled in German studies at numerous Australian universities. What motivates these young Aussies to immerse themselves in German language, culture and science?

In a bid to find out more, SBS German spoke to Dr Heather Benbow from the School of Languages and Linguistics at Melbourne University, and two of her Australian students, Matilda Milford and Louis Taffs.

Matilda has a German grandmother and Louis, we learn, has just returned from a 10-month exchange at the Technische Universität Berlin - made possible by his choice to enrol in German studies.

We also learn who or what lies behind a new theatre piece, “Kleine Momente im Großen Krieg”, to be performed on the 25th of October (University of Melbourne) and 27th of October (Monash University).
