The St. Martin lantern walk in Melbourne

St. Martinsumzug Melbourne

Begeisterte Kinder und Eltern beim Laternenumzug der deutschen Community durch die Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne.

Every year on the 11th of November, St. Martin is celebrated in German-speaking countries. In many regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, parades are held after sunset in honour of St. Martin. The German community in Australia has also been organising lantern walks for years - although not in November as usual, but in May.

People from young to old met on Saturday evening at Trinity Church in Melbourne. For the church service - followed by a lantern procession through the Fitzroy Gardens. Afterwards there was bratwurst, pretzels, mulled wine and Kinderpunsch, just like at home. Daniel Georgakos reports for SBS.
