Major accidents in civil aviation are actually only rare today. The aircraft are safer, the electronics are more reliable, the pilots are better trained and flight safety is closely monitored — yet, the year began with two spectacular flight accidents. In Alaska, shortly after takeoff, a door fell out of the fuselage of a new Boeing and then, following a collision in Tokyo, a large Airbus completely burned out. All passengers were rescued, but that could have been a disaster. How can such incidents occur? Benjamin Kanthak asks aircraft engineer Lasse Krutschinna this question:
