In Germany, the number of psychologists' practices is regulated by the health insurance system, but there, as here, the need for therapy has risen sharply due to the pandemic and the waiting lists are long. However, the German health insurers pay for far more sessions than we are allowed by Medicare in Australia. In our science series with Catharina Vendl, we listen to an interview with German psychotherapist Maria Attenberger, who works in Frankfurt. It is the second and last episode of this small series about psychology in Germany and Australia in comparison.

This two-part series with Catharina Vendl is about the differences in the approach to psychology and therapy in Australia and Germany, the perception of mental illness, the attitude of the population, treatment and the training of psychologists. In the first part, Catharina Vendl spoke with Dr. Bettina Christl, who has a practice in Sydney and gives us information about the situation in Australia.

With these two programmes, we want to help uncover misunderstandings and break down prejudices.

Taking care of one's mental health is often still frowned upon, yet it is an essential part of health in itself and very often has a physical impact. Especially since the many lockdowns and the Covid-19 stress in the world, many more people are mentally unwell than many assume.

In general, mental health problems affect an average of one in five Australians each year, and it is estimated that 45 per cent of all Australians will be affected by a mental illness at some point in their lives.

As a member of a team of researchers, Catharina Vendl is also involved in the production of the podcast series Boiling Point, which can be heard, in English of course, on the internet here:
