Nationwide anti-immigration demonstrations made headlines in Australia over the weekend. Thousands of people marched through the capital cities, and there were sometimes violent clashes with police and counter-demonstrators. Officially, the marches were directed against so-called “mass immigration” — but far-right neo-Nazi groups used the rallies to spread their ideologies and conspiracy theories. There were attacks in Melbourne and Sydney in particular, while politicians warned clearly of a dangerous development.
