"O'zapft is!" has been the Bavarian battle cry to kick off Oktoberfest for around 200 years. In Brisbane, this call for a jolly good time has now been echoed by two passionate Germans who organise Australia's largest Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest Brisbane has been entertaining Brisbane party folk for a decade. However, as German-born organisers Kim and Boris Zoulek have told SBS German, every year, the event becomes more popular with the locals.

While Australia has seen many German Festivals come and go, Oktoberfest Brisbane seems to strike a chord with young Australian partygoers, but also with many members of the local German community, who appreciate the effort that has been put into the event, which stretches over two weekends at the Showgrounds, a central Brisbane location.

Austrian-born Maria (r.) has been to the Oktoberfest in Munich numerous times, however, she is convinced that the Brisbane version is as close to the original as it can get.

The band that entertains the crowds over two weekends has been flown in from Munich, especially for Oktoberfest Brisbane. The music ranges from Bavarian Folk to modern German Party-Schlager, mixed with a bit of Aussie pub rock.

There is plenty of food and the beer has been brewed with German taste buds and Queensland licencing laws in mind. As the Festival Director Boris Zoulek has told SBS, there is still room for more and of course, room for improvement.
