Hilke and Tobias Volbert have decided to build a sustainable family home in Brisbane and share their experience with SBS Queensland correspondent Katharina Lösche.

Price is the top priority for most first-time house builders in Queensland - building companies therefore have standardised housing types that fit on equally standardised land. But for many people, that’s not enough anymore: conserving resources, protecting the environment, avoiding waste - in times of globalisation, resource depletion and climate warming, a desire for more sustainability is growing. But if house building should be sustainable, energy efficiency alone is not enough.

In Brisbane, Hilke and Tobias Volbert have opted for a sustainable home. The problem is: you have to invest first to save long-term.
