Juliane Simm was celebrating her 7th birthday in a small village in the heart of the former GDR when news broke of the unexpected opening of the Wall. 

Now living in Australia, she says her parents greeted the news with a mixture of joy and apprehension. Her father even feared the outbreak a new war.
