On 17 October 1949, then prime minister Ben Chifley watched the first blast of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme which grew to become the country's greatest engineering project, as well as the cradle of Australia's multicultural society.
Two years ago, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announces plans for a $2 billion expansion of the Scheme but experts doubt the value of new the project and say the money should be spent on other sources of clean energy.
