Evelyn, Olivia, Caitlin, Chelsea and Kang from Class 10 at St. Peters Lutheran College won third prize in the "Unternehmen Deutsch" competition, an initiative organised by the Goethe Institut. They chose SBS German as their partner and produced a video entitled "Unity in Isolation". In this video, they present their proposal for a podcast series on SBS Radio in German, which aims to support the community during the Corona Pandemic, especially in relation to their mental health. We hear about the students' experiences with the project and from their teacher Martin Schaefer, who supported them.

Unternehmen Deutsch promotes cooperation between schools and German or Australian companies with a connection to Germany in the region. The project is organised every year by the Goethe Institut and combines aspects of career orientation with creativity and inventiveness.

In 2021, more than 300 students from 18 schools participated in the popular Australia-wide ideas competition and presented 97 innovative ideas. The winning projects can be viewed on the website of the Goethe Institute, which initiated the competition.

Yes, and SBS German was there again, of course, and one of the groups that worked with us, Grade 10 students Evelyn, Olivia, Caitlin, Chelsea and Kang from St. Peters Lutheran College won 3rd prize in Term 3.

They made a video called "Unity in Isolation". In this video, they present their proposal for a podcast series on SBS Radio in German, through which the community will be supported during the Corona Pandemic, especially in relation to their mental health.

We hear about their project, their experience with the initiative, what they learned from it. And we also talk to their nice teacher Martin Schäfer.

He himself immigrated to Australia when he was 15 years old, and in addition to his teacher training, he is also trained as a natural scientist. That's why he teaches science at St. Peters Lutheran College, the largest school in Queensland, but he especially loves teaching German.

Since St. Peters is a Lutheran school, there is also a considerable German background and some of the students have German-speaking relatives or ancestors. Thus, German as a foreign language is very popular and even a compulsory subject in grades 7 and 8.
