Since 1985 there is a very special student exchange between the German state of Hesse and Queensland in Australia:

In their respective summer holidays, 15 to 17 year old students visit for approximately 6 weeks,  the other end of the world.

The students from Hesse are made welcome in Brisbane, Toowoomba and surroundings, the students from Australia are living with their partner families  throughout the state of Hesse.

A highlight of the tour down under: Over 5000 kilometres by bus through endless natural landscapes to the tropical rainforest in North Queensland, stopping for breakfast with kangaroos and koalas, to national parks and places of worship of the Aborigines in the outback and to the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef with an opportunity for snorkeling, swimming, diving and sailing. But the students also learn about the school life in Australia: they experience a typical High School alongside their guest siblings.

SBS-Queensland correspondent Katharina Loesche has visited three Hessian exchange students at the "Cavendish Road State High School" in Brisbane.
