German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s momentous decision three years ago to open her nation’s borders to refugees has come to define her political career.


Germany accepted over 1 million refugees during what Merkel  described as ‘extraordinary’ circumstances.

23-year-old Karim Abdel was among the many refugees who came to Germany.

He lives now in Hamburg and speaks fluent German.
