In exactly one week, it’s the start of a worldwide research project, called the "One Health Poultry Hub”.

Researchers from 11 countries and 27 organisations from all continents are taking care of the public health issues that may be associated with a rapid increase in poultry production.

While the rapid expansion of chicken and egg production may help to quickly meet growing food demand, especially in developing countries, inadequate management can pose a range of disease and risks to poultry and consumers.

Research teams will be gathering from laboratory, clinical, veterinary, and social scientists to create a “One-Health approach” that will support the development of guidelines for the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of poultry production systems and health threats to reduce the risks for humans and animals. The German PhD Joerg Henning from the UQ in Brisbane is head of the Veterinary Research Unit of this project. SBS correspondent Katharina Loesche talks to him about his work in developing countries and the opportunities of the "One Health Poultry Hub".
