In today's Science Talks with Dr. Dr. Catharina Vendl, we hear her interview with behavioural scientist Dr. Livia Gerber, who studies the social system of dolphins. She did her PhD at the University of Zurich and is now doing her postdoc at UNSW in Sydney.

Nowhere in the world do so many dolphins live in such a small space as in Shark Bay in Western Australia, says Dr Livia Gerber. That's why they need to be particularly innovative and are one of the first populations of animals in which we can describe culture. Dr Livia is particularly interested in the social system of dolphins, which is the most complex social system we can observe outside our own species, Homo Sapiens. There is a lot of cooperation in the upbringing oft the young for example, and even a kind of friendschip-alliances-system amongst the males, who defend the group against outsiders.
