Why hoarding of food and sanitary items?

The current numbers of coronavirus infections are increasing daily all over the world - there are now 400 confirmed cases in Germany, 52 in Australia. A first patient died in Switzerland from the consequences of the corona infection, and so far two in Australia. For comparison: In Germany, the flu alone has caused 200 deaths this year and around 120,000 people have been infected with the influenza virus. In addition to the actual spread of the coronavirus, the fear of infection seems to be increasing much faster - and more irrationally: hoarding of food and sanitary items as well as restrictions in social life are the consequences.
