In 2015, while the Federal Government took credit for what it has termed "stopping the boats," riots, death and upheaval also dominated headlines from Australia's detention centres. And Australia's treatment of asylum seekers drew harsh criticism both at home and abroad. Meanwhile, the continuing Syrian civil war and the growth of the self-proclaimed Islamic State deeply affected refugee policy around the world, including Australia's.
