Close to 150 people are feared to have drowned after ships carrying 300 migrants from Libya to Italy capsized. The UNCHR says its the greatest tragedy in the Mediterranean this year.

Local fishermen and Libyan authorities rescued about 147 people from the sea. The survivors estimate that 150 more drowned.

UNCHR spokesperson Charlie Yaxley said the survivors were likely to be sent to two detention centers in Libya. The United Nations have been calling for the release of the people in these centers, citing ''harsh living conditions'' and ''reports of human right abuses''.
