This year's NAPLAN (National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy) national report is being described as a "wake up call", with results showing students declining overall in their English reading and writing scores.

Students, however, from migrant and non-English speaking backgrounds are topping the nation in Year 3 spelling, while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children have improved their results significantly over the past 10 years. It should be noted that the national diagnostic NAPLAN examinations take place every year in Year 3 and 5 as well as Year 7 & 9. Listen to a special report from the Newsroom compiled by journalists Natarsha Kallios and Mat Connellan which has been adapted for SBS Radio’s Greek Language program by Dimitrios Kametopoulos.
