Mairead Hannan, Christella Demetriou and Polyxeni Theologidis perform songs in Melbourne that have become known and loved through the women who sang them. Rebetica is a musical culture almost exclusive to men as creators; a culture that grew out of migration, the hardship of war, dictatorship and unimaginable poverty. Women had no place in public life in the 30s, through this bohemian culture they were embraced and soon the role of the liberated woman, came to be, through song. Rebetica gave birth to the most expressive, free thinking, vivacious and radical women, the 30s, is when they first appeared to be celebrated and to celebrate their passions. From the 30's to today, Rebetica is a music that has been embraced by all generations. As a music it is not only soulful but weaved in the most intricate rhythms and modes that reflect thousands of years of musical history as Christella Demetriou told Sotiris Hatzimanolis.Enjoy this music in an intimate warm atmosphere. Last performance is on Sunday, 25th June 4pm at Platform 1 Middle Brighton Railway Station, Church St, Brighton.
