The Victorian government has rushed to allay fears in the wake of news that Hazelwood power station is likely to close as early as April, a move that could cost the Latrobe Valley up to 1000 jobs.At the same time an extraordinary spike in South Australia's wholesale electricity price in July sounded an alarm across the five states that share the National Electricity Market.A study by the Grattan Institute argues that without a single nationwide climate plan, household power bills will rise unnecessarily and Australia will not hit its carbon cutting targets.More from Themis Κallos and Sotiris Hatzimanolis.
