Mr Katsambanis has told SBS Greek that an Australian ANZAC monument on the Greek island of Lemnos is on route to become reality after the half a million in funding announced at the recent federal budget.
Lemnos, situated opposite Gallipoli in the Aegean Sea, was the base for the ANZACS forces who took part in the Gallipoli campaign in WW 1. ANZAC forces would land on Lemnos and the Allies' ships, troops and medical personnel were stationed in Lemnos in 1915-1916.
Recent efforts by Greek -Australians such as Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, saw the proliferation of events and commemorative localities on the island of Lemnos but not a formal Australian monument which will pay tribute to the legacy of the island's ANZAC past.
Half a million dollars have been allocated for a study which would, hopefully, lead to an Australian ANZAC memorial.
