China has dismissed rumours that it is responsible for the increased number of cyber attacks in Australia as ''baseless''.

On Friday, prime minister Scott Morrison revealed that Australia has been experiencing an increased number of cyber attacks from a state entity.

"We know it is a sophisticated, state-based cyber actor because of the scale and nature of the targeting, and the tradecraft used," Mr Morrison said.

Mr Morrison would not name the entity responsible.

The think tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute claims the attack most likely was from China.

"A few others have the capacity but they don't have the scale to do it as broadly as this," executive director Peter Jennings Mr Jennings said.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said that the allegations of the Institute were ''baseless nonsense''.
