Koraly Dimitriadis is a Cypriot-Australian writer whose debut short story collection, The Mother Must Die, delves into family relationships, questions of identity and the migrant experience.

The collection examines family dynamics, cultural expectations, and the impact of unspoken histories.

On the migrant experience, Dimitriadis notes: “There’s a lot of trauma that came with those that came to Australia because of war, because of poverty… a lot of that trauma was passed onto our generation.”
Dimitriadis explains her motivation for writing these stories: “I want people to question how the little things contribute to the bigger problems that we face.”

Dimitriadis also reflects on the ways her writing connects with readers, saying that hearing from people who relate to her stories reinforces the importance of sharing these experiences.

She emphasises that fiction can create space for reflection and understanding, allowing readers to engage with complex family and cultural issues in a meaningful way.
