Cyprus celebrates the 56th anniversary of the proclamation of its Independence. On the occasion, Professor of History Petros Papapolyviou, at the University of Cyprus talks to Nicki Karakatsanis. Cyprus became an independent country after a four year war from 1955 until 1959 against the British. Cyprus was a former British colony from 1878 until 1960. The island actually gained its Independence on August 16th,1960 although it is celebrated on the 1st October. Independence Day is celebrated with festivals taking place at schools and within local communities. The largest celebration of this day is held in Nicosia with a military parade.
