Darwin’s mayor Kon Vatskalis said that the city’s residents are upset about last night’s deadly episode in Northern Territory’s capital and praised the immediate actions but local Police authorities.

Speaking to The Greek Language Program of SBS Radio, Mr Vatskalis said that “last night, a member of a very good family” killed four people and injured a woman. “So far there is no explanation. The police are investigating not just in Darwin, but also in NSW and as far as New Zealand, looking for connections as to why this incident occurred.

“What we know is that this person was previously in jail and that last January he received a conditional release. He hadn’t done anything bad up until now, but suddenly last night he illegally acquired a gun that was not his and killed four people. After that he called the police superintendent and asked to surrender and be placed under protection. The superintended notified the police who arrested the man shortly after.

“I have to say that the police’s response was fast and effective, as they managed to confront the perpetrator and arrest him.

“Still, questions remain: Why did this happen, what was the cause and of course Darwin is a very small city. A peaceful city and this has upset its residents”, said Mr Vatskalis.

Asked, if he knows if there is a person of Greek descent among the victims, Mr Vatskalis said that “I cannot confirm that yet”.

“The police are currently trying to identify the victims, which have been shot in the head. It will be some time before we know what happened. I do not believe there is a person of Greek descent among the victims and the injured but I cannot confirm it”.
