A 35-year-old woman has been arrested as the main suspect in the vitriol attack on 34-year-old Ioanna, a case that has shocked Greece since May 20. A "friend request" on social media is being presented as the spark for the attack.

22 days after the acid attack with vitriol against a 34 y.o woman on her way to work, Greek authorities arrested the alleged culprit. She is a young and presentable 35-year-old woman, a private employee in a law firm, who had no close relationship with the victim. They were just acquaintances. Although they came from Etoloakarnania and went to school together for a while, they were not what is considered "friends" in real life. They were "friends" only on social media and specifically on Facebook.

The alleged perpetrator was following the profile of 34-year-old Ioanna and often "liked" her photos and posts. The last time she  "liked" a new photo of Ioanna, was just a few hours before the pre-planned attack with vitriol. This was just one of the elements that led the authorities to arrest her.

How the authorities got to her tracks

At the same time, the case was "tied" by the security camera recordings, the telephone conversations, the prepaid phone card used by the perpetrator and the movements of the 35-year-old woman with a taxi, from the point of attack. Yesterday morning, police were at the 35-year-old's house and arrested her while she was trying to escape. She had been living in an apartment with her brother for five years, neighbors said.

She was in possession of the red-and-brown wig used in the attack, the phone card with which the taxi calls were made, the black coat and the bag worn by the woman who carried out the attack.
Authorities say she tried to cover her tracks diligently, but made some minor mistakes, such as pre - booking the pick up taxi for two days outside Ioanna's office, at the same time as the attack. Also calling a migrant from the same  phone card for a personal issue, eventually led the authorities to her door.

However, so far the 35-year-old has not pleaded guilty. Her family asked well-known criminologist Sakis Kechagioglou to represent the 35-year-old and he accepted. The prosecutor filed charges against her for attempted premeditated murder, in a calm state of mind, which is a felony, and for the misdemeanor of disobedience. The 35-year-old has been given a deadline until Tuesday to apologize to the investigator.

"Friend request" the motive?

In a crime that destroys the life mainly of the victim, but also of the perpetrator, there should be a possible motive. Authorities are examining the ill-fated jealousy as the most likely motive.

A year ago, both women attended a wedding.  There, the alleged perpetrator was accompanied by her former partner. The fact that he spoke to Ioanna at some point and later made a "friend request" to her on Facebook angered the 35-year-old. How much; So much so that a year later she stalked Ioanna at her work and douched her with vitriol? Creating burns on 90% of the face and 20% of the body?

According to the 35-year-old's ex, the alleged perpetrator was pathologically jealous and blamed Ioanna for the bad course of their relationship. He testified that he had nothing to do with Ioanna and that everything was in the mind of his ex-girlfriend.
