Greek-Australian migrant George Gotsis, a declared communist, freedom fighter and retired wharfie and one of me most prominent figures in the Greek-Australian community passed away in the early hours of Saturday 13th April 2019, in a Sydney hospital.

As his Union (MUA) noted, George Gotsis is best remembered as the “Godfather of May Day” - keeping it alive for the past four decades.
Mr Gotsis was for many years the leader of the Greek League “Atlas”, and kept close ;links with both the CPA and KKE in Greece.

During the military junta in Greece (1967-1974) he lead the  black bans on Greek shipping during the persecution of unionists and other progressives by the dictatorship.
