National Volunteer Week (21-27 May 2018) is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate and acknowledge the generous contributions volunteers make across all sectors of our society. Australia has almost 6 million volunteers, and one in three Australians volunteer through organisations and institutions. This figure does not account for the millions of other Australians who informally give their time to volunteer through other activities and initiatives.
Recently, Greek Australian welfare organisation 'Pronia' organised a special event to honour its volunteers. The keynote speaker was volunteer coordinator of 'Dementia Australia', Ms Jasinta Archar.
SBS Greek interviewed four volunteers, 88-year old Mr Themis Borobokas, one of Greek community's eldest and longest serving volunteers, his wife Mrs Sofia Boroboka, Ms Voula Papadopoulou who arrived in Australia from Greece in 2012 and has served as a volunteer for the past four years, continuing a habit that started in Greece and Mr Ioakim Christodoulou who became a volunteer in 2017 and claims that volunteering has changed his life.
