The Byzantine Empire was one of the greatest the world has known. Originally, it was the eastern part of the Roman Empire, with its capital at the Greek city of Byzantium (renamed Constantinople). This Eastern Roman Empire became increasingly Hellenised, especially after the western provinces were lost to invaders. Greek became the lingua franca and Orthodox Christianity the dominant religion. Byzantine scholars kept classical studies alive, preserved and copied the manuscripts of ancient texts, and paved the way for a new awareness of the glorious Greek past in the western Renaissance.
