Greens candidate Jonathan Doig, who has been vying for the seat of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the last election, has been charged with three counts of exposing a minor to online child abuse. He is accused of directing and monitoring the live abuse of children in the Philippines on the Internet.

He was arrested but released on bail pending trial.

The accused was talking daily to a 13-year-old girl in the Philippines from December 23 last year until he was arrested yesterday. They exchanged 352 images, some of which were child abuse material, and he has transferred $ 129,224 to people in the Philippines over the past 10 years.

Five other conversations with girls have been uncovered and police are still analyzing Mr. Doig's electronic devices, some of which are encrypted, so they expect to reveal more victims, authorities said.

Under the terms of bail, Doig cannot access the internet or electronic devices and contact children aged 16 and under, must stay away from schools, report to the police three times a week and hand over the his passport. He will appear in court again in July. Defense attorney Greg Stanford said Doig's wife would "monitor his behavior" and "ensure compliance with the bail terms" while the defendant remains at the family home.

The Greens Party has expelled 57-year-old Jonathan Doig. Federal Greens Leader Adam Bandt said:

The Greens stand with the survivors of child sexual abuse and condemn in the strongest possible terms those who seek to harm children.
